New Leaf Community Markets Reusable Bag Program Leads the Way!

2 comments so far

Today in Santa Cruz California popular New Leaf Community Markets announced that they have hit a milestone in successfully not using “plastic bags.” This milestone in particular was the announced 3,000,000 (3 millionth) bag which was packed and NOT made of plastic!

A huge part in what has allowed New Leaf to have such great success with encouraging people to bring their own bags has been and continues to be with the beginning and wild success of their Envirotoken program.

Envirotoken is program begun by New Leaf 3 years ago in which every customer who brings their own bags is given a token (typically worth $ .10 cents). At the entrance to the stores there are “Jars” and the customer has the ability to choose between a multiple of charities to donate to.

As a thank you to the people for making the Envirotoken program such a success, New Leaf is offering a $ .20 cent token today!

The Envirotoken has contributed $220,698 to dozens of local organizations including Save Our Shores, Fishwise, Homeless Garden, Project, Native Animal Rescue and People Power. For more on the story see the article here at the Mercury News.
We here at ReuseThisBag.com encourage the use of reusable shopping bags in all aspects of our daily lives and raise our hats to New Leaf in their honor today. This program has so many benefits. First, the program encourages people to remember to bring their own bags. Second, it allows people to give a nickel or a dime to a charity of their choice (where typically they would not). Lastly, it allows the retailer to spend $ .10 cents on the token and charity and saves them thousands on what they would be spending on plastic bags had they still benn buying them.

Great Work New Leaf! You have made us proud!
