It’s here, it’s finally here! It’s April 22nd, which is finally and officially the Earth Day 2009 we’ve all been waiting for.

Apparently some people don’t have the time or energy for a full-on Earth Day — for them, there is the oh-so-convenient Earth Minute which is apparently makings its debut on May 20.

On May 20 at 4:17 p.m., billions of people around the world will hold their collective breath for a full sixty seconds, preventing tons of CO2 emissions from entering the atmosphere. After Earth Minute is up, they will all go back to their normal lives polluting and impacting the environment, at least until Earth Minute comes back around next year (or until someone comes up with Earth Second).

Scientific question: don’t all those CO2 emissions go up accordingly as soon as those 60 seconds are over and everyone breathes out? Is there any way to measure the supposed lack of carbon emissions? Will frivolous acts only serve to minimize and trivialize the true importance of daily eco-awareness? (People already complained about the futility of Earth Hour, and at least that gave us gorgeous photographs.)

Have you done something special for the environment today? Bigger question: do you make every day Earth Day? Because as important as awareness is, it takes a lot more than just one day — or hour or minute — to make a truly lasting impact.

Earth Day is coming! Only two more days away, it’s almost here! More news from the eco-front: things are getting greener up at CBS studios in Los Angeles, where the classic game show The Price is Right! will be getting an eco-friendly makeover for Wednesday’s episode.

In observance of Earth Day, Wednesday’s episode of the CBS game show will feature environmentally friendly products including cell phones made of recycled materials, solar charging equipment and a recycling cabinet.

Environmentalist and actor Ed Begley Jr. will introduce a showcase that includes an electric bike, golf cart and Toyota Prius hybrid car. Trips offered during the show will be paired with donations to offset carbon emissions.

Whenever something green is going on in Los Angeles, you can bet that celebrity eco-warrior Ed Begley Jr. isn’t far behind! Executives at CBS understand just how much power celebrity can have, and express the goals they hope to achieve by bringing an environmental spin to the popular game show.

“More than ever there are things that we can do that are really simple to do,” said Barbara Bloom, senior vice president of daytime for CBS. “We can do that as people who supply entertainment. We are a powerful tool for messaging. I just wanted to remind people that it’s very easy to keep this in your consciousness as you go through your life.”

This episode of The Price is Right! will air on Wednesday, April 22nd — Earth Day!

A beloved icon once said, “It’s not easy being green.” Perhaps this is the case, but actor Paul Rudd sure is giving it the old college try, donning a giant globe costume and piling on the charm as Mr. Earth himself on the Sesame Street special Going Green. Rudd is notorious for his unabashedly awkward impromptu dancing, and he certainly doesn’t hold back here, busting out moves that would make Carlton Banks green with envy. Best of all, it’s for a good cause: Sesame Street’s Going Green DVD (printed and packaged with 100% sustainable materials, natch!) is all about Elmo and his furry friends holding an Earth-a-Thon to teach kids about the importance of keeping our planet healthy and how to help, from conserving energy to remembering the all-important Three R’s. Elmo gets so passionate about the cause, he turns green in the process — and when it comes to the environment, green ain’t such a bad color to be.

Want to see a clip? You know you do.

The DVD is out now, so check it out! It might just be the perfect Earth Day gift for the little one — or Paul Rudd fan — on your list.

The blogosphere is still eagerly awaiting the coming of Earth Day (April 22!), and it’s interesting to see how hotly the topic is being covered on Twitter as thousands of eco-conscious and tech-savvy microbloggers sound off on their thoughts and suggestions for the holiday and surrounding month. Some of the tweets hold some real interest, for example LA Neighborhood Clean-Up Project letting us know about a clean-up of Echo Park scheduled for the 26th:

LANCUP: Celebrate Earth Day #EarthDay in Los Angeles by helping clean up Echo Park!!! http://www.usaservice.org/page/event/detail/environment/4rxyg

Or how about WhiteFence blog‘s tips about eating healthier and greener?

WhiteFence: Tip Number 8 in our Countdown to Earth Day: Green Eating! http://tinyurl.com/d7u5ht #green #earthday #food

Plenty of personal blogs and eco-activism blogs alike have been posting about a number of conservation-related topics.

EcoInteractive: Important Project: The Prince of Wales introduces his rainforests project http://replantingtherainforests.org/site/index.php/urgency/rainfore… #rtr09 #earthday #eco #green

Interested in getting in on the micro-discussion? Simply check out the Earth Day channel for Twitter and see what pops up! It seems like there’s something new every minute.

Earth Day — it’s still coming! The eco-awareness world is abuzz with excitement, but one big question remains: why limit yourself to just one day? With the sheer amount of help this world needs, shouldn’t every day be Earth Day? This is the question that New York’s Star Gazette asks us today.

As we are in the middle of the spring months, it is time to think about the outdoors and how we can better care for the environment. When you think about helping our environment, you think of Earth Day, April 22.

But why limit yourself to one day? What some people don’t know is that there are several easy ways to improve the quality of our lives on Earth that may not even affect your daily routine.

As unassuming as it might seem, to mention one’s efforts not affecting their daily routine, but for most it is vital, when making small lifestyle changes, to not outright change one’s lifestyle. So, what can you do to start making some easy changes in your life? It’s as simple as keeping your trash where you can see it.

While on a bike ride in the warm weather, the last thing you want to see is trash on the roadside. Products we use every day, such as plastic bags and aluminum cans, take years to decompose. A simple way to limit the roadside trash is to keep a convenient garbage container in your vehicle until you reach a garbage can where you can throw it away. How easy is that?

I like the added insinuation that you’ll be riding your bike a lot in the summer weather — it’s a good connection to make. I know I just pumped up my bike tires, and am looking forward to getting the most out of the ever-improving weather.

Read on for more on junk mail, the trouble with plastic bottles, the benefits of reusable bags, and how to make everyday your own personal Earth Day.
